Artist Statement
The graceful lines and playful nature of a T'ang dynasty statue inspired Eleanor Kotlarik Wang to generate a series of paintings which seeks to connect imagery from an ancient age into the here and now. The works are also visual expressions of a poem by a Han dynasty poet named Zhang He, which described court dancers from that era. The series is however, more than an interpretation of images rooted in the past. It is also a journey of the imagination, full of movement and mystery to which the viewer is invited to engage.
Their long sleeves twirling
And twisting fill the hall;
Gauze-stocking feet…
Taking mincing steps,
Moving with slow and easy gait.
They hover about long and continuously,
As if stopped in midair;
Dazed, one thinks they are about to fall.
